Visit the Markets of Tavistock

Tavistock Dratmoor

Tavistock, the ancient stannary town is nearby for shopping. It has regular markets and small shopping arcades which are well worth a visit.

Tavistock features a Pannier Market granted in the year 1105 to the then local Abbey. The 1105 Royal Charter is still in operation and the Town Council are the current custodians.

A market is held every day of the week except Sundays and Mondays.

Visit Historic Princetown

Princetown, the home of the historic Dartmoor Jail, still in use, is about five miles away and makes a spectacular site. The town has a interesting visitor centre plus good local pubs and cafes.

The Dartmoor Prison Visitor centre offers a fascinating insight into the colourful history of the prison and its inmates.

Postbridge is situated at the very centre of the Dartmoor National Park, it has become a natural starting and ending point for thousands of ramblers exploring Dartmoor. You can enjoy a drink and hot food in the local hotel.

Okehampton the walking centre for North Dartmoor

Okehampton offers a range of activities as well as easy access to the moor. It is walking centre for the northern region of the National Park.

The recently opened Okehampton railway line offers a limited service running on weekends only. A second line, the 'Dartmoor Pony' runs from Okehampton across the dramatic Meldon Viaduct to nearby village of Meldon.

The Museum of Dartmoor Life is housed in a former mill, with a restored water wheel, has a large collection of local photographs and documents.

Buckfastleigh Southern Edge of Dartmoor

The quiet town of Buckfastleigh is best known for the nearby Buckfast Abbey and the South Devon Valley Railway. The steam railway follows the old Ashburton line, along the river Dart through Staverton to Totnes, some 7 miles (11km) away.
